Nelsonville Winter Trek

To the other end of the spectrum from the Big River Trifecta, my kids and I set out with some friends on a winter outing to explore the bottom-lands of the Tomorrow River in Nelsonville, WI.  I rallied my kids to walk down the hill from my house to the trailhead.  The entire outing spanned 4 hours and covered about a mile from our origin and destination, Ruby Coffee.  The day we picked turned out to be picture perfect.  The warmest weather we'd had in weeks and the March snow pack, over two feet deep, were ideal for snowshoeing and back-country skiing.

The guidelines were simple:  Get the kids out in the woods and cook some food over a fire.  We'd go as far as we'd see prudent to avoid any meltdowns.

There was no climactic event that served as a pinnacle for the trip, except that on the way out I realized I was wearing a smile for no good reason.  It sure felt good to get out and enjoy Winter's last stand with some friends.
